A vivacious photographer, full of energy and the enthusiasm of a 20-year old youth, Maggie Steber has a joyful perspective on life that always paints a warm smile on her face, and makes her gain the hearts and minds of people around her. Maggie works for the National Geographic, which in 2013 named her as one of eleven Women of Vision on world level. She also worked for Newsweek Magazine and the Associated Press. Her photographs are exhibited in several high-profile venues around the world, including the Library of Congress.

Maggie was on the panel of judges of the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Awards (HIPA) in its edition featuring the theme “Happiness”. She has delivered a fantastic lecture at the HIPA offices titled “Glimpses of Human Life”, which reflected her documentary-orientated humanistic visual art and the depth of feelings expressed in her photographs. Maggie was one of the most eloquent photographers to convey to me the story-telling power of photographs; in depicting real-life issues that touch hearts and take the viewer on a journey of emotions, from the abyss of grief and sadness to the heights of joy and happiness; and in evoking a sort of empathy in the viewers that drives them to identify with the images and assume roles and adopt views as they interact with what they see.

Through her photographs, Maggie tells stories of human interaction, and the various shades of human suffering and inner transformation, with each photograph having its distinctive character that draws the viewer into its peculiar emotion and reflections. Throughout her art, Maggie has been a highly professional and faithful teller of stories that blend flowing emotions with conflicting senses.

Maggie has travelled to various countries and cultures to directly experience thousands of stories, which she translated into a superb visual communication that few photographers could match. She has proved that a female photographer has the edge over any male photographer when it comes to the depth of emotions and subtlety of the message. It seems as if there’s a natural affinity between a female photographer and her subject when it comes to intense emotions and the ability to tell the story through a sequence of photographs.

Her lens took us to another time and space to tell us a story in such detail and thrill that we could fully live the characters portrayed moment by moment. She has cleverly captured immortal moments and feelings in a style and perfection that we haven’t seen before.
